Mille Vini (meaning ‘a thousand wines’ in Italian) is a small restaurant and bar located in the heart of Surry Hills‘ famed Crown Street. With an Italian influenced menu, they offer lots of share plates and a selection of the finest local and international wines.
A relatively small space but spread over two floors, it is tastefully decorated and comfortable. There is both table seating and bar seating.
With a fantastic wine selection, we naturally indulged in a couple of glasses. If you can, try to grab the bar seat that overlooks Crown Street. Perfect for a bevvy or two whilst watching the world go by.
Our first order was for the beef carpaccio ravioli filled with truffled mushrooms and served with aged balsamic, parmesan and mustard vinaigrette. This refreshing and light dish was a delightful flavour explosion in the mouth. And the perfect starter!
Next up was the Aperol cured salmon with radish, beetroot chutney, basil and orange. Another refreshing dish that is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Who doesn’t love salmon! Bright and vibrant with a very nice citrus hit!
If you order nothing else, order this. Slow cooked veal and fragrant tomato ragu with Nona’s Macaroni. Homecooked by a real Italian nonna who helps out the kitchen with a few of their dishes. It seriously doesn’t get any better than that! And nonna’s love is evident in the deliciously rich and comfortable bowl of pasta. This is an absolute must order!!!
Our last dish was the slow cooked octopus with pear, fennel, cauliflower puree and sauce vierge. Very large and meaty and so incredibly tender. This was bang on in terms of taste and texture. And fantastic wrap to the savoury dishes.
We wrapped up with signature sfingi with Nutella (Italian doughnuts). Light doughnut balls sitting on a bed of nutella. Such deliciousness in it’s simplicity. Definitely recommend one of their sfingi combinations to share (nutella or nutella, strawberry and lemon curd).
As locals, we’ve driven past this place a million times. And we’re so glad we finally managed to drop in. Excellent service and food and wine to match! Not sure how you’re spending your Friday nights, but this is where I’ll be spending mine!
