Avenue Road Café Mosman is a busy, light and airy cafe within the leafy Lower North Shore suburb.
It is located near the Avenue/Military Road intersection and next to the popular Four Crepes Creperie restaurant.
The Avenue Road Cafe Mosman seats about 50 people (inside and out) with the main centrepiece indoors being a large chandelier surrounded with comfortable banquette seating along the white-washed walls. While the interior may seem slightly dated, it is well kept and has that old/new world charm.
The menu has a variety of options to suit everyone. There are light meals, signature/house favourites and healthy options for breakfast and/or lunch.
If you’re looking for something sweet there’s much to choose from the glass cloches displayed on the front counter.
For coffee, the Avenue Road Cafe, mostly uses Double Roaster beans but if caffeine is not your thing, there are lots of other drinking options on the menu.
Juices such as their Green Cleanser (kale, spinach, celery, apple, mint, lemon, ginger) or Refresher (watermelon, apple, pineapple, mint) are healthy alternatives.
On our recent lunch visit, we ordered 3 dishes to share. The Masala Prawn Pappadum, Bombay Chicken Pie and Pan Seared Barramundi.
Masala prawn pappadum – cucumber, tomato salsa, fresh coriander, chilli, corn, raisins, cashews, black salt and lemon dressing
We loved the crispy pappadums and Indian spices of this dish. We wanted the prawns to be spicier but it was still a good starter to share.
Bombay Chicken Pie – winter vegetables, puff pastry, minted peas and green salad
This was a hearty pie and we were lucky enough to try it. We would expect their new spring Menu to come out soon, so don’t delay if you want to try this! We loved the chicken and vegetable filling which had just the right amount of gravy sauce and how the puff pastry lid was not sealed to the pie dish. That meant we could enjoy the perfectly baked crispy pastry on its own or dunk a portion of it into the filling.
Pan seared barramundi – fennel salad, avocado salsa, coriander and pistachio pesto with sweet potato crisps
Mint, one of the onsite managers, recommended this dish as it was one of their popular dishes along with the burgers on offer. This light and healthy dish has been on their menu for some time. Why you might say? … fresh fish cooked to perfection, refreshing fennel salad and crunchy sweet potato chips come to mind.
After consuming the 3 dishes at the Avenue Road Cafe Mosman, we found our 2nd stomachs and tried the Belgian Waffles (the After-School Special) which were served with ice cream, toasted almonds, butterscotch/Belgium chocolate sauce and banana/strawberries. Sounds good doesn’t it? Even better when you are told it comes with a milkshake of your choice! The Nutella shake went down a treat before the camera could even try it so apologies for no pic of the shake. You will have to take our word for it!
We would like to thank Mint and her staff for taking care of us during our visit. Here, we have tried to share a sample of food and drink options available from their cafe menu and we hope you pay them a visit soon and are able to enjoy the same experience as we did.
