Surfers Paradise based Brooklyn Depot have landed on our shores. “Burgers and Brews” apparently.. but so much more than that. Hot dogs, chicken wings, mac n cheese, and killer desserts. They even have a little something for the salad eaters out there 🙂
Located on the outskirts of Surry Hills (a mere 5 minute walk from Central Station), Brooklyn Depot have a convenient takeaway window for those on the go, bar tables and stools, large group tables and cosy booths. And even seating at the bar for the ideal #tableforone.
The first cocktail of the night was the ‘Surgeon Generals Warning’. Buffalo Trace bourbon, Amaro Montenegro digestif, acid wash, Canadian maple syrup and cinnamon smoke. And they’re not kidding about the cinnamon smoke. They literally light up the cinnamon stick for a wonderfully aromatic cinnamon infusion. Our other cocktail was the Lychee’t & Steal Martini, which was a delicious concoction of Tanqueray gin, lychee liquor, rosemary syrup, lemon juice, pear juice, and smouldering rosemary.
The menu is expansive and it’s a crowd pleaser. It’s everything we love about American food. We’re talking burgers, hot dogs, pork ribs, dirty fries, cobb salad, milk shakes (even boozy ones!), sundaes and chocolate brownies! An absolute killer menu.
We started with a dish that is not only a must order but one of our favourites for the night. The spicy housemade beef chilli topped with sriracha yoghurt served with tortilla chips and guacamole. Such meaty deliciousness that you get only from hours of simmering. The perfect dish to nibble on as you enjoy a beer or three!!
The ‘pimped’ chicken wings come in 3 styles: sweet BBQ, spicy buffalo or crispy southern fried. As chilli fiends, we went with the spicy buffalo which had a really good level of heat and was finger licking good!
The mac and cheese was another favourite. A 3 cheese mix (gruyere, mozzarella, parmesan) baked in bechamel and topped with crispy bacon and spring onions. It’s next level mac and cheese (none of that cheap, bright yellow cheese here!). This is quality cheese and it’s delicious. Our only regret was in not adding the truffle flavour which you can do for just an extra $3.
One of their best sellers is the depot pork wiener, beef chilli, nacho cheese, cowboy caviar, guacamole and sour cream hot dog, served with a side of tortilla chips. Almost like a de-constructed plate of nachos and hot dog, all in one! Bonus!
The ‘chicky babe’ burger is a buttermilk chicken thigh fillet, depot slaw, chilli relish, american cheese, cowboy caviar and chipotle mayo. Juicy. Thigh meat really is the only way to do a chicken burger properly. This chicken was juicy as hell and the ‘cowbow caviar’ aka salsa was the perfect topping for this burger.
We wrapped up with the double waffle ice cream sandwich for dessert. And seriously, how else would you wrap up an american feast!?! Two maple flavoured waffles sandwiched around vanilla bean ice cream and topped with chocolate sauce, fresh strawberries and blueberries. So deliciously divine and the perfect end to our dinner. We’ll count the calories tomorrow.
There are plenty of burger joints around town. But Brooklyn Depot have a differentiator in that they’re more than just burgers. They’ve got the traditional American dishes we all know and love. And they’re executed perfectly! They also have a killer booze menu that will have you buzzing all night. An absolutely welcome addition to the Sydney food scene, and as a local, I know I’ll be returning!
