Riverview Hotel, from the front
Situated in Balmain, hidden at a corner off the main road, this local pub/hotel is totally worth the visit. With very friendly service and a general relaxed vibe, this two-faced drinking hole gives you the option of enjoying great food and beverages at the counter, and the alternative option of dining upstairs by candlelight with the one you love: all enclosed in this beautiful 19th century tavern.
We had a really had a hard time choosing from the menu; everything looked so inviting and delicious, and not just the food, but also the great variety of fine wines. The Riverview Hotel has long been associated with good food, from founding licensee, Thomas Morton through to Olympic gold medal swimmer, Dawn Fraser.
Serrano & Persian Feta Pizza Bread $15
We started off with our usual Prosecco and Aperol aperitif, better known as an Aperol Spritz, along with this Serrano and Persian feta pizza bread, a very delicate, tasty, thin-based crust topped with world class ingredients that will definitely shut you up! My goodness, so good!
Freshly shucked Sydney Rock Oysters $3.5 ea
These melt-in-your-mouth Freshly Shucked Sydney Rock Oysters from Sapphire Coast’s Merimbula are superb, a pearl of the New South Wales coast no less. Served on a bed of thick rock salt, these succulent oysters dipped in red wine vinegar, eschalots and vanilla sauce are sensational. As you taste them don’t be surprised if they make you feel like you’ve just collected them from the sea… they’re an absolute winner.
Try matching these oysters with a glass of 2015 Rosily Chardonnay or with a glass of Pouilly Fume!
Crispy Lamb, Orange, Witlof, Mint Yoghurt and Millet $19
This alternative to the Sydney oysters is a fantastic entree. A light and healthy salad that dances beautifully with a hint of yoghurt and cereal, with a clever addition of crispy lamb flakes. And that’s what makes this dish so tasty and curious!
Beef and Guinness Pie, Colcannon & Roasted Dutch Carrots $30
Just the thought of it makes my mouth water again for more of this flavour packed filo pastry pie, filled with shredded beef on a creamy Colcannon (a traditional Irish dish mainly consisting of mashed potatoes with kale or cabbage) with an added delicate gravy and a bite of roasted Dutch carrots and a glass of red… mmm superb!
Riverine Sirloin, Sweet Potato, Eggplant & Broccolini $32
Riverine Sirloin alone is an outstanding cut of meat, however you like it cooked. Perfectly cooked medium rare, very tender and not at all chewy: this sirloin will not leave you disappointed. Served with fresh healthy vegetables, it was enhanced with a remarkable and unique cumin and eggplant sauce, the result in your mouth is pure satisfaction. Try matching this dish with a glass of Argentinian 2014 Los Locos De La Baya Malbec, a rich red wine with blackberry hints and a long finish.

Let your palate cool down with this extraordinary dessert. Popcorn on dessert? Not the usual, but the creamy and crunchy textures worked quite well, definitely worthwhile trying! So break away from your usual dessert, and have a go! You won’t be sorry.
Chocolate Mousse, Honeycomb, Orange & Sherry Vinegar Caramel $15
Finished off with this decadent chocolate mousse, perfectly accompanied by pieces of orange jelly and honeycomb crumbs.
