“El Topo” is a roof top restaurant and bar located on Level 3 within The Eastern Hotel. With a discreet entry via Oxford street and direct access via Westfield Bondi Junction, El Topo has built a reputation as one of Sydney’s most loved and talked about Mexican restaurants.
As the lift doors open and you enter, things start to get interesting. You’re presented with a array of colours and decorations spewing classic Mexican themed arts, statues and icons to the funky tune of Mexican music in the background.
Standing proud in the centre of this buzzing establishment is their bar showcasing a plethora of drinks featuring close to 100 Mexican white spirits including five sotols, 20 mezcals and close to 80 tequilas used to create El’ Topo’s famous cocktails. Holding an impressive cocktail menu, they specialise in Mexican Classic Margaritas. I can say from many, many, MANY previous experiences these zesty cocktails are the cats meow!
Options include the Classic, Coconut, Jalapeno, Tommy’s (with added agave syrup) and Chilli. I got myself a Chilli Margarita, made with house infused chili tequila, with a salted chilli rim. I would definitely suggest this if you love a nice kick to your booze.
Addicted to the tongue tingling heat I also went for this interesting drink. Made with Herradura Blanco Tequila infused with house pickled jalapeno. The sweet and sour flavour combined with the pleasant heat of the pepper really is something special and unique.
El Topo is known for offering traditional Mexican style street food from roast crickets (Chapulines, actually not bad I must say), Tacos, Quesadilla’s and Fried Chicken. Now that spring is here, a new, fresh and exciting menu change has been put into place.
El Mexpocho Shooter
We started our night with a delicious little shooter, packed with flavour and made with delicious chunks of prawn, chorizo, capsicum, avocado mousse, coriander and olive oil. A nice flavour bomb to kick the tastebuds into gear.
Tostadas De Salmon
A deliciously fresh salmon ceviche, mixed with jalapeno, eschallot, chives, coriander, lime, olive oil, sea salt, chipotle sour cream and smoked paprika. The crunchy base is perfectly contrasted with the generous soft topping that ‘s smokey, zesty and creamy altogether.
Ceviche De Pez Real
El Topo have really hit the nail on the head with their fresh fish dishes, this one is a kingfish ceviche with red onion, coriander, cherry tomato, radish and palm heart. The combination of the lightly cured fish, with the addition of a cloud-like coconut foam (unusual, but good) makes this dish light, tasty and one to definitely remember.
Taco De Pollo Frito
These soft tortilla Tacos, contain crispy yet tender fried chicken with a herby aromatic coriander salsa. One of these may not be enough however, as after taking one bite you’ll instantly crave more. These are super great to share and come neatly lined up on a wooden board for easy eating.
Nodillo De Cerdo
This monster of a Crispy Pork Hock was covered with a tasty mix of chilli salt, sherry caramel, pickled cucumber, mint, coriander, charred pineapple and pickled grilled onion. The chilli salt seems to infuse into the crispy crackling giving a kick of spice that translates all the way to the succulent meat.
Oaxaca Whole Snapper
Jalapeno, green tomato, cucumber salsa and micro herbs. This snapper had a nice charred flavor with a crispy skin on the outside, while still providing a slightly firm yet flaky texture inside.
Cordero En Achiote
Lamb brick, beetroot, quinoa, zucchini salad and achiote sauce. This meaty piece of lamb literally came out in the shape of a brick, coated in an orange sauce that it’s been cooked in. A light press with my fork, exposed the tender pieces of meat that were melt in your mouth good.
Caramel Cream Pot
Chocolate ganache, chilli lime peanut brittle, ice cream and popcorn. Creamy, crunchy, soft and sweet is something you’ll be experiencing with this dessert. The pop corn has the fluffiness, while the brittle crumbles to the bite and finally the ganache combined with the chilli lime gives the creamy texture while providing that hint of a zest.
Sorbete De Tequila
House made tequila and lime sorbet with chilli. Fancy some ice cream, but feeling a little naughty. Order a few scoops of sorbet goodness with a hint of tequila to enhance the taste.
El Topo is the kind of place where you can unwind, have a good time and enjoy some of the best Mexican food and drinks in Sydney. Whether it’s a full blown belly filler or a cheeky drink with mates El Topo won’t disappoint.
