With Good Food Month raging all around Sydney, it’s nice to just take a step back from the hustle, bustle and intensity and really sit back, relax and enjoy food for what it really is. That’s why I was so excited to attend a Hat’s Off Dinner at the luxurious Berowra Waters Inn. Nestled amongst the gum trees on the scenic and serene banks of the Hawksbury River, this iconic Sydney fine dining establishment is holding a 3 course menu created by their talented head chef Brian Geraghty. Paying tribute to his time at Shane Osborne’s two Michelin-star Pied a Terre, Brian is bringing it’s timeless classic dishes to Berowra Waters Inn with a contemporary elegance that shouldn’t be missed.
bouillabaisse with yoghurt foam & pumpkin mousse with rosemary & ginger
A due of sweet and savoury amuse bouche. The pumpkin mousse was light as air but dense with flavour. The sweetness of the pumpkin mixed with the pungent flavour of ginger and aromatic rosemary added a light and fresh kick to the pallet. On the flip side, the bouillabaisse was rich and savoury with a heady mix of herbs and spices cut by the whipped yoghurt.
scallops, cauliflower puree, brandade mousse & lemon
Stunning in it’s simplicity, the hokaido scallops were plump and juicy, cooked just barely enough to keep their robust buttery flavour and texture. The wafer thin shaving of fresh cauliflower added a lovely fresh crunch and complemented it’s pureed counterpart deliciously.
lamb with aubergine, cumin & red pepper
Lamb done two ways and both amazingly delicious in their own unique way. The larger, cutting like butter and cooked to a perfect pink perfection, the smaller made of ridiculously tender shredded lamb that melted in your mouth. Both were covered in a herby breaded coating which added lovely texture and flavour.
hazelnut mousse with chocolate, coffee & lime
A perfect end to a perfect meal. The light crack of the thin chocolate layer was sheer perfection as I spooned the opulent hazelnut mousse into my mouth. The coffee sorbet a creamy interjection in this chocolate heaven. The little drops of lime gel cleansed the pallet each time creating a fresh experience each bite.
Whether by day or by night a trip to Berowra Waters Inn is a magical experience in itself. From the lazy boat ride from the wharf to the casual elegance of the dining room, this place has something really special about it.
The meals are meticulously decadent and leave you with a satisfied smile on your face. The Pied a Terre Hat’s Off Dinner run on selected days until the end of October.
