Good Food Month is always my FAVOURITE month of the year. I’m sure it’s obvious why. Fantastic markets, opulent events and delicious new menus all to celebrate that thing that makes everything worthwhile: FOOD. Of all the foods in the world, my absolute favourite would have to be cheese. Encompassing this, and in the spirit of Good Food, the gorgeous Abode Bistro Restaurant is running “Fromage to you”, a delectable four course wine matched degustation to celebrate their love for cheese. Being an absolute devotee to cheese I immediately made a reservation.
Jannei Buche Blanc goats cheese with braised leeks, candied walnuts and sherry vinaigrette
A brilliant starter and a very generous one at that. The four disks of sharp and creamy goats cheese were matched with fresh and peppery greens and soft, buttery sections of leek. The candied walnuts added a satisfying crunch and sweetness. Matched with a spicy, flavoursome and textured Yalumba ‘Y’ Series Pinot Grigio.
Crab & gruyere soufflé with Le Superbe Gruyere Swiss
Hot and moreish, the cheese souffle literally melted in a hot steamy mess. The sharp savoury flavours of the cheese were warm and comforting playing host to the sweet and succulent crab meat.
This dish is matched with a crisp, lively and fruity Yalumba ‘Y’ Series Sauvignon Blanc. The wine had a cleansing acidity, perfect for the heavy flavours of the cheese.
Parmesan and herb crusted veal rack with 18 month aged Grana Padana, endive and apple salad, tomato relish
This beast of a chop was sizzling with rich and herby aromas. The light golden crunch of the parmesan coating did wonders in keeping the pink meat juicy and tender, infusing it with it’s glorious flavour. The accompanying tomatoes added a sweet balance to the savoury as did the spiced apple salad.
Matched with a glass of Yalumba Traditional Galway Shiraz, a full bodied wine with blackberry and dark chocolate flavours.
Cheese board with Will Studd Le Dauphin France (Brie), Quickes Oak Smoked Cheddar (England) and Milawa Blue (North East Victoria)
It wouldn’t be a cheese themed dinner without a huge board of the stuff to finish your night. With a great selection of smokey cheddar, creamy brie and a bitey blue, plus ample lavosh, nuts, quince and fruit, this could easily have been a meal in itself.
Served with the cheese was this delicious Yalumba Muscat. A rich and sticky drop, the wine had a caramel raisin flavour that goes perfectly with the pungent flavours of the cheese.
Alas, our cheese filled meal had to end sometime and with bellies full and smiles on our faces we rolled out of Abode Bistro well satisfied and yearning for our next visit.
Abode Bistro’s amazing cheese degustation is only $99 with matching wines and will be running until the end of October.
