Flexitarian you say? Flexi-what? Flexitarian, or a semi-vegetarian diet is one that is plant based with the occasional inclusion of meat products. Soul Burgers push plant based burgers and free range animals in their food. With burgers ranging from the healthy (think mushrooms and chickpeas!!) through to oozy cheese laden beef burgers – these guys have got something for everyone.
They have a variety of beverages which include shakes, beer and cider. My drink of choice was the salted caramel shake. This was essentially liquidized dessert, and so incredibly good. One really can’t go wrong with salted caramel. Universally the best flavour ever!!!
First up was the good old traditional cheeseburger. Grass fed beef, with a delicious mustard aioli and tomato relish. There was fantastic flavour to the beef patty, requisite oozy cheese, and an absolutely awesome light milk bun from Brasserie Bread. The bun is crucial to a good burger and it was reassuring to know they use one of the best.
We then went down the healthy route for a second (only a second) and got the falafel burger with tabouli, chilli sauce, jalapeños, lettuce, tomato, aioli and tahini. Woo hoo!!
Now this had a kick! For all you chilli fiends out there, this is the burger for you. Mediterranean flavours in the falafel, boosted by a powerful chilli hit.
We then tampered down our burning palates with some kumara fries with aioli. So many places do limp and soggy sweet potato chips. Not here. The fries retained their crunch throughout our meal. One of their best sellers and definitely a must order!
Our favourite burger of the night was the marinated free range chicken that came with a seriously delicious herbed mayo and tomato relish. Perfectly cooked chicken that was super tender and moist and a fantastic sauce which we absolutely loved. We even asked what was in it!
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Soul Burgers. We took comfort in knowing that these folks use quality produce in their food. Friendly service, a casual and comfortable ambiance, and delicious burgers. Now that’s how I want to spend my Friday night!
