Cronulla’s very own Queen Margherita of Savoy has been given the big nod from Naples, becoming the 10th Australian pizzeria to be certified by the Associazone Verace Pizza Napoletana.
What that stamp of approval from Naples means is that the beach ‘burb venue has been authenticated as a place that serves traditional Napoletana pizza as it adheres to the stringent set of guidelines laid out by the association. These guidelines ensure the finest quality pizza money can buy.
Owner Lee Carroll, an eighth-generation Australian who grew up in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, says he received the news about his AVPN accreditation via email on the eve of the restaurant’s first anniversary on May 13 soon after the stroke of midnight.
“Being given that nod by Naples is very, very special,” says Lee Carroll, whose wife Sharon works the floor, and children Jackson, 15, and Jorja, 18, help out in the kitchen.
Eager to jump straight in, we left the ordering in Lee’s capable hands. The classic is always the best. Simple and perfect with rich tomato sauce, fresh cow’s milk mozzarella, basil, olive oil & grated grana padano.
After the first bite we knew we were in for a good night. These guys really know how to make a pizza. A true and traditional Italian pizza is all about simple and fresh ingredients that don’t overload the senses and let you appreciate each individual and unique flavour.
As with the pizza, this Caprese Salad was simple and fresh, the colours and flavours paying homage to the Italian flag.
Ricotta and Salami
This beauty was easily my favourite of the night. The hot creamy ricotta practically melts into the dough making it the perfect companion for the fiery salami and fragrant basil.
Fior di Latte, Grana padano, artichokes, cherry tomatoes
Our final pizza for the night and a very Neapolitan one at that. Almost like a margherita in reverse, the creamy and sharp cheeses takes the base with the red sweet cherry tomatoes scattered on top. A great pizza, and anything with artichokes on it gets my vote.
The Queen’s Hot Fudge Sunday $14
Have I died and gone to heaven? Is this a dream? These were the thoughts running through my head when this chalice of ice cream was set before me. The lush vanilla gelato is drenched in hot choc fudge sauce followed by whipped cream, beer nut brittle & wafer, and glace cherries. This was literally the cherry on top of a fantastic night and a fantastic meal.
If you’re in the area you would be stupid to pass this up for an easy and delicious meal. Family friendly with a casual and welcoming atmosphere, I challenge you to take one bite of their authentic slices and not want to return again.
