With an eclectic mix of traditional dishes from South East Asia and China, in a stylishly relaxed environment, China Diner represents a contemporary and fresh approach to Asian dining in Bondi.
When we heard that they had launched Yum Cha on the weekends, we jumped at the chance to get in there. A little different to the Yum Cha we all know, China Diner’s Yum Cha doesn’t get carted around the restaurant in trolleys, it’s made to order, ensuring you get a fresh meal each and every time. Not some sad drab plate that has circled the room 6 or 7 times before it’s plopped on your table.
Ocean Trout Sashimi with Ponzu $10
What an incredibly fresh and flavoursome dish to start with. The creamy richness of the generous salmon pieces was excellently balanced by the tart citrus flavours of the ponzu sauce.
BBQ Duck Buns $12
I love lifting the lid on these bamboo steamers, its always such a delight looking in and finding a perfectly plush steamed bun. These bad boys were light and fluffy with a sweet duck mixture inside. Good enough to get a second batch? I think so.
Prawn Har Gao Dumplings $13
Plump and juicy, with chunks of seafood visible through translucent dough, these dumplings were the real deal. I was surprised to find a whole prawn in these with room to spare for some delicious scallop. I appreciated the topping of fish roe as the tiny eggs burst in your mouth with salty flavour.
Apart from the excellent food, China Diner also have very talented bar staff who whip up some wonderful cocktails like – Suzee Wong (left) and Asian Spring Punch (right)
Pork Belly Bao Buns $14
A trend that I never want to see end, Bao has exploded into Sydney and people are absolutely loving it. I’ll give it to China Diner, they make some pretty damn good ones. The pork belly was incredibly soft with the fresh greens giving an Asian flavour punch.
5-Spice Duck Pancakes $24
I love love love duck pancakes. These ones were seriously decent. Nice thick slices of duck are provided with spring onion, cucumber and peking sauce. Pack it, wrap it and smash it.
Sweet and Sour Chilli Pork Belly $25
I really was blown away at how the chefs are able to make the outside of this so crispy, yet keep the meat inside so damn tender. The chunks are perfectly bite size and smothered in a fantastic sweet and sour sauce that has a little heat to it.
I really loved China Diner. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was mouth-wateringly good. Check them out for some crazy good Yum Cha on the weekends or any other day for their great menu.
