Alfie and Hetty, Glebe

DSC08280Standing proud in the hustle and bustle of Glebe Point Road is Alfie and Hetty, a restaurant with a very interesting past and very good food.

Alfie and Hetty is named after Alfie, a notorious young stand-over man for a local gangster (or so the legend goes) and Hetty, a mature widow who spent her days waiting for her son to return from WWI, ultimately in vain. Those two people who once lived side by side in the 1920‘s had created such rich history in Sydney that they inspired many aspects of the venue, right down to their roasts.

Roast Beetroot Salad $13

We started off with this slight and summery roast beetroot salad. Refreshed with watercress and rocket, toasted walnuts, spinach, caramelised pears, goats cheese and balsamic reduction. The beetroot was earthy and sweet with a pleasant bite to it. The standout however were the toasted walnuts which were candied and scattered like little crunchy treats throughout the salad.

Hand Cut Tartare $18

Quite possible one of the best tartare dishes I’ve ever had. The pasture fed Hereford prime tenderloin fillet is meticulously hand cut, then in a break of the norm, mixed with raw egg yolk instead of having it whole on top. This ensures that every morsel of meat is coated in the creamy yolk bringing this dish to the top of my many tartare experiences. As an added bonus the dish comes with the most ridiculiously good twice cooked, hand cut rustic chips (also available as a side) with garlic aioli. Perfect to scoop up all that delicious meat.

Lamb Shoulder $62

On to Alfie and Hetty’s signature dish, their 18 hour slow cooked lamb shoulder served with truffle mash, heirloom carrots and lamb jus. Firstly the dish looks bloody amazing, like something out of a magazine. Secondly (and most importantly) it tastes incredible. So confident in how soft and tender this is, they dont even give you a knife with it. Just two spoons which you use to literally scoop the meat off the bone. My favourite part is the crispy skin which is rich in flavour and drenched in the melted fat and lamb jus. Absolutely divine!

The truffle mash is as good as it looks. Soft and creamy with a rich earthy truffle taste. The perfect accompaniment to our amazing lamb.

The establishment is decked out in an elegant meets casual 1920’s kinda vibe. Perfect for the area and in tune with the property’s history.

Apart from being a top restaurant, Alfie and Hetty also cater for a more casual vibe with their upstairs drinking lounge. The perfect place to kick back and down a couple of their fantastic cocktails. On top of that they also cater for functions and large groups in this bookable space.

A roaring 1920’s feel of home styled dining.
