Paddington’s hidden gem.
Underwood Cafe is located between two terraces on Underwood Street in Paddington. It’s an inconspicuous laneway leading to a culinary oasis. You enter via an iron gate and a large wooden door, venture down a narrow path of shrubs, trees, plants and greenery and enter an open space reminiscent of a tropical location, kind of like a little mini Balinese resort.
The area is filled with large comfy couches filled with pillows, wicker day beds and sun chairs, large wooden tables, hanging lanterns and hundreds of potted plants to create the perfect casual chic atmosphere. Sit back in one of the large wicker chairs and take it all in.
Go to dishes include:
- lamb shoulder tagine – slow cooked lamb, almonds and apricot with a bed of aromatic cous cous
- the pulled truffle chicken – poached chicken breast, lightly coated with Dijon crème, watercress and basil on a base of dressed rocket
- seared tuna niçoise salad with soft boiled eggs
- Paddington style steak sandwich, 100 day grain fed yearling steak with balsamic beetroot, roasted capsicum and salsa verde
Great for early morning breakfasts, casual dining and relaxed lunches. Their coffee is seriously impressive.
