As you may know, we absolutely love Japanese food and are always on the lookout for the next hot new restaurant to delight our senses. Who would have thought that we would find it smack bang in the middle of the Gold Coast?
Yamagen, located at the QT Gold Coast, has undergone a major transformation under the keen eye of award winning interior architect, Nic Graham. This uber chic eatery blends modern designs with traditional Japanese style creating an absolutely stunning space and atmosphere.
Yamagen blends culinary excellence with authentic Japanese methodology, all balanced within an upbeat atmosphere which sees a contemporary reworking of the traditional izakaya…resulting in a premium and cutting edge restaurant with expansive cocktail bar.
We started off with an exciting flight to the bar. A whiskey flight, I mean! Helmed by the talented mixologist Jordy, we were taken through the huge array of Japanese Whisky on offer while indulging a couple of favourites.
If I didn’t know anything about whiskey before I certainly do now because Jordy really knows his whiskey! Fragrances of apricot and peat, chocolate and cherry assailed our nostrils while our taste buds got a real workout.
Sake It To Me
If that wasn’t enough, we also had the privilege of sampling some items off the cocktail menu, our favourite being this delicious drop made with a blend of tanqueray gin, sake, lemon cucumber and dill. Delightful!
Chili Garlic Butter Edamame $7
These spicy edamame were the perfect way to get the juices flowing. Rich and savoury we definitely suggest these over plain. SO good we were licking our finger afterwards.
Crispy Salmon Skin Salad 14
This delightful plate had all the makings on an amazing salad. Fresh and crunchy, this mix of cress, daikon, fennel and baby beet was drizzled in a tangy yuzu kosho dressing.
Sashimi Moriawase (20pc) 70
A gorgeous ice-laden bowl of fresh slices of tuna, salmon, kingfish, snapper and scallop, each expertly prepared and beautifully presented. Almost too beautiful to eat! Almost…
Yamagen boasts its own traditional Robata grill. Diligently manned by a skilled chef and filled with special Japanese charcoal, the meat and vegetables get a deliciously smoky taste and mouthwatering texture.
Lamb Cutlets, Aka Dengaku, Chive 20 & Wagyu Darling Downs Kobe Qld, Ms6+ 22
Both meats were absolutely moreish, melting in the mouth. The beef in particular was smothered in a savoury wasabi butter that was to die for!
Aburi Tasting Set 15
A tasty platter of different Aburi, each with their own unique combinations and flavours.
Miso Black Cod 45
When done as well as this, it’s easy for me to say that Miso Black Cod is my all time favourite dish ever. The tremendous balance of sweet and savoury mixed with the buttery flakey goodness of the cod. Don’t think about it. Just get it.
Just when I thought this meal couldn’t get any better, out come these golden fried sweet donut balls. Light as air and filled with a fresh tangy yuzu curd, we literally could not get enough of these.
What an absolutely phenomenal meal! The food, the drink and the atmosphere are all a winning combo at Yamagen. If you’re in the Gold Coast you seriously need to check it out.
