Niji is located in the heart of Double Bay and offers contemporary Japanese cuisine. Spread over two floors, with a stylishly designed fitout, the team at Niji bring you traditional Japanese flavours in the form of modern Japanese dishes.
We started out with fresh oysters with ponzu granita. It was refreshing and punchy – the perfect start to our Japanese feast!
Next up was the tuna tartare with soy truffle dressing and crispy lotus roots. The tuna was fresh and delicious and the crunchy lotus roots were the perfect vehicles for this fantastic tartare dish.
We then enjoyed one of the best dishes of the night. The signature nigiri set. We had the wagyu with caramelised miso butter (aburi), the scampi with foie gras, and the kingfish with sancho salt and orange honey jelly. That scampi was outstanding!
The next dish had an amazing visual impact. The beef carpaccio was 7+ wagyu, thinly sliced with a spicy soy honey and fried quinoa. Beautifully plated and melt in your mouth thin slivers of beef. So good!
Next was the prawn tempura. Very large tiger prawns in a very light crispy batter with a soy dashi broth. Another favourite. That batter was so light and non-greasy. A sign of a successful tempura dish!
Another favourite for the night was the foie gras, imported from France, served with rice crackers and shiraz grapes. So creamy and so much umami. This is definitely a must order dish and one to be shared as it’s quite rich and decadent.
We finished off with 9+ wagyu grilled, with amayaki sauce and cherry tomatoes. This was served medium rare and so incredibly tender and flavoursome. It doesn’t even require the sauce!
We wrapped up with the miso cream crunch. Oven baked miso, brandy snap, creme fraiche ice cream. This dessert had it all. It was sweet, it was savoury, it had creaminess and it had crunch. A tick in every box! And the perfect wrap up.
Niji is the perfect spot for that relaxing weekend lunch or that get together with friends on a Friday night (or even hump day!) It provides the perfect backdrop for some delicious cocktails and even more delicious Japanese delights. And be sure to sit at the sushi bar and see the chefs create their magic.
