A bach (pron. batch) is a small, iconic kiwi holiday home or beach house. It was a place where food and drinks brought people together, where the most important thing was being surrounded by friends and family, sharing stories and reminiscing about the good times.
This was definitely the experience I enjoyed at The Bach Eatery in Newtown. All their dishes are entrée size, designed to share, perfect to nibble on whilst sipping away on a glass of wine or indulging in a cocktail.
NZ Cloudy Bay clams w/ chardonnay vinegar + NZ Paua & Prawn Arancini w Kaitaia Fire mayo
Beginning the night with these 2 bite-size delicacies was ideal for cleansing the palate before we began. The fresh clams were dressed with a deliciously sweet and sour chardonnay vinegar whilst the arancini was jam-packed with flavour. Despite it being a ball of rice, it wasn’t heavy on the stomach and the spicy mayo helped to enhance its flavour.
NZ marinated king salmon w/ verjuice dressing & toast
I really enjoyed this dish with the most aromatic and freshly sliced salmon on lightly toasted bread. It reminded me of bruschetta with its super crunchy texture and olive oil spread.
Cuttlefish, peperonata, squid ink dressing
Once again, the fresh seafood was served to our table with strong fragrances of its flavour. The cuttlefish was buttery and tender matching perfectly with the punch of flavour from the peperonata. The crunchy leaves added a forkful of textures with every bite. The subtlety of the squid ink dressing went unnoticed as the dish was bursting with flavour.
Thrilmere chicken liver pate w/ seasonal pickles & chutney
A simple dish, but my favourite of the night, the chicken liver pate was silky-smooth with bold distinct flavours. The pate’s richness was stated by the sweetness from the chutney and a slight tang from the pickles. Together, with freshly toasted bread, the ingredients amplified each other’s flavour. With such a large serving of pate, we were provided with more bread so we wouldn’t waste it.
Crispy Duck Confit & Pork Cassoulet
A slightly heavier dish, the duck was cooked to delicious tenderness, seasoned with a pleasantly salty flavour which went excellently with the creaminess of the white beans, diced vegetables and bread crumbs. Quite a hearty dish, the pork added an extra, and very welcomed, savoury boom to the dish.
Pavlova in a glass
So fluffy and so sweet, this dessert bowl was extremely hard to share since I wanted it all for myself. The meringue texture was light and bouncy with its sweet flavour enhanced by the raspberry coulis. It went down seamlessly, which left me craving for more. The perfect dish to end the evening of delectable dining.
Conveniently located near Newtown Station, this venue is a must-visit for intimate dinners or small group gatherings. The wait staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating, guaranteeing an enjoyable experience.
