Generally speaking, I guess you could define Strathfield as my “hood”. My Sweet Memory is a very longstanding notable cafe in Strathfield so when I noticed it has been closed off, alarm bells in my head went off “!!!!!”.
Luckily, it was only undergoing renovations to relaunch as Chefs Palette. Funnily enough, it was only a few days before I mentioned to my friend that the Strathfield area really lacked cafes offering a full menu in the midst of Korean Restaurants. Maintaining the exposed brick walls from its MSM days, Chefs Palette has an extremely rustic and tavern ambience with the dim lighting and shared tables. As well, they have a gorgeous display of tempting desserts for your eyes to drool on.
Salt and Pepper Squid Salad ($15)
This salad compromised of crispy salt and pepper fried squid accompanied with saffron mayo, radish, zucchini pickles and citrus duon vinaigrette. I like pickles. I don’t like zucchini. Luckily, I liked zucchini pickles and it was great for giving the pepper fried squid a nice zesty kick. Given the generous amount of squid, I think an addition of a wedge of lime would have been a ideal.
Beetroot Cured Salmon Salad ($13)
The plate was beautifully presented with the fanned 48HR sea salt, beetroot cured Tasmanian salmon accompanied with fennel, green apple, dill, horse radish cream and sherry vinaigrette. The attention to detail of this plate was definitely appreciated but I thought the fennel was slightly out of place.
I’m not sure what I was thinking, taking that much coffee in at 8pm. One of my favourite parts of affogato is the thin coffee coated crunch on the scoop of ice cream. I have a sweet tooth so a more generous scooping of ice cream would have done this affogato well.
The thin slice of watermelon wedged between a cheesecake like texture topped with sliced grape jelly was definitely a great way to end the meal. It was refreshing without being overly sweet.
The green tea flavour was promising and perfect with the cookie crumble at the bottom to keep the texture and flavour combination interesting. Another great dessert to the end a meal.
Overall, Chefs Palette is a worthy addition to the Strathfield night life and is a great contender to compete with the café jungle of Sydney.
