Did someone say conspiracy theory? We think the locals are trying to keep Charlotte Cafe hidden from the rest of Sydney… The secret is out! Nestled away in the affluent Birchgrove is this hidden gem. It is merely a short stroll from Balmain Wharf and Balmain’s retail strip.
This newly renovated character filled café with its wooden floors and table tops radiates with warmth. From the moment we entered, we were welcomed with beaming smiles from staff who were genuinely happy and seemed in high spirits amongst the hive of activity.
Sitting down, it felt like home. Picture having a meal in your kitchen surrounded by family and friends…simply sit back and relax.
Known for always being in the house, Jason (the owner) actively engages and chats to patrons adding a personal touch to this establishment. With his Mama Helen contributing to the kitchen and adding that secret ingredient that only mums know about, this kitchen’s output is marvellous.
Before we get stuck into the meals, the coffee needs a mention. We ordered a piccolo and wow! This Campos brew was like liquid gold with a buttery smooth finish yet, had enough oomph to clear those midmorning caffeine withdrawals.
The menu is filled with soul food offerings of classic hearty meals with a Middle Eastern twist. There is something for everybody. Absolutely perfect for breakfast, lunch or brunch with the family. All dishes are reasonably priced with substantial portions sizes. Gluten free, paleo or allergy concerns? The kitchen altered our meals without any hesitation and showed genuine concern in trying to get things right.
Pulled pork burger – pickles, salad, special gravy sauce
Kaboom! That’s the sound of this thing landing on the table. This flavour filled giant was packed with succulent pork cradled between freshly toasted bread. The sauce had a sweet tang which complimented the dish well…salivating just thinking about it again.
Squid Ink spaghetti, tiger prawn, chilli jam in house Napoli sauce
Loved it! Loved it! Perfectly cooked pasta provides the vehicle for this sultry Napoli sauce. Tender prawns were in abundance soaking up the crimson sea of chilli tomato flavour. Every mouthful finishes with a fresh crustacean essence.
Lamb wrap marinated lamb strips, hummus, spiced onions, tomato, grilled eggplant, mixed salad & tahini
Roll up your sleeves and prepare to get your hands dirty. These lamb tenderloins with fresh ingredients stuffed into a soft wrap is best eaten by hand. Be prepared for a delightful sauce dripping experience.
Corned fritters, baby spinach, roast tomato, grilled haloumi, bacon
We’ve got a winner over here! These golden discs of sunshine delivers bursting flavour with fresh corn popping in your mouth. The fritters consistency was firm not soggy. Although the grilled haloumi and bacon were gratifying, they were the backup singers to the fritters this time. Yum!
Charlotte’s Café is everyone’s local.
