Greek at the Belvedere, Sydney CBD

Opening in the busy Belvedere Hotel in the CBD, Greek at the Belvedere is a cosy space dedicated to providing a mix of quality traditional and modern Greek cuisine. Recently opened, we decided to check it out.

We started off the meal with some warm seasoned pita bread and olives. The bread had a nice slight crisp from the grill. The olives were big in body and flavour.

Saganaki Kefalograviera $12

If you’ve never had saganaki before you need to get some in you pronto. The cheese holds well on the grill getting a nice golden crust on the outside while getting all soft and gooey on the inside. With a strong yet not unpleasent salty taste it has the likes of a softer more flavorsome haloumi.

Greek Salad $15

My tastebuds scream with yearning whenever I see a properly made Greek salad like this. With not a shred of lettuce in sight, the thick slabs of creamy crumbly feta were generous going hand in hand with the fresh sweet tomatoes and crunchy cucumber.

Taramosalata $7

A true and proper taramosalata is white in colour so I was happy so see the Belvedere sticking to traditions. Smooth and creamy with that key savoury, salty taste of the sea, it was superb scooped up in the warm accompanying pita.

Grilled Octopus $23

These thick chargrilled tentacles were so succulent and tender. Marinated in a zingy lemon dressing with a fresh salad on the side, this was an excellent share plate.

Lamb Shoulder $32

This succulent hunk of lamb was the star of the show. Soft, tender, with the meat falling effortlessly off the bone. The side of potatoes were perfectly seasoned with a crispy skin and fluffy center. As a must, a side of creamy tzaziki is present to cut through the rich meaty flavours of the lamb.

When eating Greek only the finest ouzo must be drunk. Luckily The Belvedere supplies some top quality after dinner ouzo.

DSC00686 Galaktoboureko $8

Easily one of the best Galaktoboureko I’ve ever had. Filled with a flawless custard filling, the filo pastry encasing the slice is uber thin yet with all the moisture remains unspeakably crispy.
