The Oaks Villa Maria Lunch, Neutral Bay

On a sunny Sunday afternoon we made our way to the Stunning Oaks Hotel in Neutral Bay for a lovely long lunch to showcase the amazing collection of wines by New Zealand Winery Villa Maria.

Lightly Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc 2013

We started off the event with this Lightly Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc. Bursting with passionfruit and fresh lime aromas with a lingering sparkle and small delicate bubbles that enhanced the fruity flavours within.

Matching the sparking Sav Blanc were these bite size deep fried school prawns. Insanely crispy and full of flavour, these beauties were best dipped in the accompanying smoked onion aioli.

Pinot Gris 2014 Cellar Selection

Next on the list was this lovely Pinot Gris. Exhibiting intense aromas of fresh ripe pear, hints of gentle spice, flavours of baked apple, almond and cinnamon, followed by a balanced drying acidity all creating a lengthy and harmonious finish.

The Pinot Gris was matched with this dish of Buffalo Mozzarella, Trout Roe, Crab Salt, Crispy Leeks and Kale Chips. The creaminess of the mozzarella really balanced out the strong salty flavours of the dish, particularly the trout roe scattered about, while the leek and kale added a pleasant crunch.

Pinot Noir 2012 Cellar Sellection

A lovely fragrant red smelling of cherries, red berry fruit and subtle spice notes. This wine is concentrated and juicy and best served with red and white meats including lamb, beef, venison, duck, rabbit and wild game.

To go with the red was this hearty dish of Duck, Radish, Smoked Carrots in a Cherry Mustard Sauce. The duck was cooked to tender perfection with a great fat to meat balance, but my favourite part was the smoky carrot puree. Such an intense flavour hit, all I could imagine was how happy I would be bathing in this!

Reserve Noble Riesling

The final wine was a fantastic sticky that took out the favourite award in my eyes. The intense riesling had aromas of citrus zest and honeysuckle, accompanied by intense Noble Botrytis characters of apricot, mango and dried fruits.

Lastly was our dessert of Summer berries with gingerbread and meringue, topped with a scoop of Messina’s salted coconut gelato. The mix was altogether fresh, tart and sweet making for a lovely end to a fantastic meal.
