Outings with old friends often end up being messy so with that in mind we decided to organize a post Christmas catchup in an eatery renowned for their fun and messy eating style. Specializing in something similar to Southern American crab boil, the idea is that you choose from the assorted range of seafood (SA Mussels, Little Neck Clams, QLD Prawns, Blue Swimmer Crab, Snow Crab and King Crab), then you choose which sauce you want them in and wait for the magic to happen. Lets just say in this establishment the phrase “I’ve got crabs” is a massive plus.
Decked out in ye old nautical style the space boast tables for all kinds of parties including a super long table for large groups.
Buffalo Cucumber $6
Fresh crunchy pieces of cucumber smothered in a strong vinegary chilli sauce. Adding to the kick-in-the-face flavour is a sharp blue cheese and a scattering of peanuts. Great with a icy cold beer (get the Kosciuszko Pale Ale – on tap)
King Crab in Creole Butter $45
The King is in and hot dam is he tasty! Massive long spiny legs encase juicy chunks of crab meat. The thing I love about king crab is that you’re not there for hours picking out tiny bits of flesh. One crack and the whole chunk just pulls right out. All smothered in a spicy creole butter.
QLD Prawns in Cajun Sauce $32
Plump and in the shell these prawns are no shrimps. Swimming in a picante tomato Cajun sauce, my favorite part was ripping the heads of and sucking all that rich seafood flavor out of them.
SA Mussels in Mexican Sauce $19
Fat little mussels just begging to be broken out of their shells awaited us in the steaming bag of Mexican flavour. Don’t forget to use those shells to scoop out all that remaining sauce once your done.
Baby Back Pork Ribs $36
I want my baby back baby back baby back baby back baby back ribs. I want my baby back baby back baby back baby back baby back ribs… So we got them. Not only does House of Crabs serve amazing seafood, but they also make a nice range of southern style meats like this tender maple glaze rack. Divine!
Buttermilk Fried Chicken $22
You can’t have a southern style meal without some friend chicken and watermelon. Devilishly crispy on the outside and perfectly tender on the inside. So good we ordered it twice.
The best thing (apart from the amazing food) about the House of Crabs is that all your food scraps just go into the center of the table. No plates, no bowls, no lemon water to dip your precious fingers in. This is real food and therefore should be eaten as such. Every time we go we have an unspoken no cutlery rule and the good thing about saucy fingers is that you get to lick them afterwards. Of course there’s hand towels and hand washing facilities available, I mean they’re still a restaurant, but you get the gist of it.
